ECOSS Honeycomb

"Honeycomb" is a patented (US Patent No. 5,650,875 dated Jul. 22, 1997) member of the "Ecology Sun System"(ECOSS) family of sunlight modulating products developed by Figla Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan. "Honeycomb" is used primarily for sun shading.
"Honeycomb" is a panel of inter-connected 12mm deep metal hexagons which is inserted into the glass unit's air space. A typical "Honeycomb" application might be to provide shading for a building skylight subject to significant unwanted solar gains from the summer sun. While the sun's unwanted heat is intercepted, the daylight interreflected by the honeycombs, is delivered to the room softly diffused. The accompanying photos show just such an application of "Honeycomb" to the Matsushita Information and Communication Center in Tokyo, Japan.
Viewed from the inside, "Honeycomb" is, unlike ECOSS W,T or D, fully transparent at certain viewing angles giving the occupants a chance to see the sky or landscape. Because the honeycomb is inside the glass, the heavy maintenance typically associated with internal and external shading devices is avoided entirely.
"Honeycomb" panels can be designed to fit into almost any window configuration imaginable.
As determined by computer simulation, cell size and density can be modified depending on the shading requirements. The cells can also be painted to alter the color of the diffused light.
